4 Tips to Make Guitar Playing More Enjoyable

Don't you just love playing the guitar? Whether it be a simple 3 chord progression song or you shredding the living daylight out of that maple wood fret board, knowing how to play guitar is really fun and kinda separates you from the "normal Joe."

In this post, which is also the first one on this blog (yay), we are going to highlight various ways/exercises you  that you could implement in your playing routines that will definitely help you become a better guitarist in the long run.

Ease Up on Your Thumb

This one is aimed for newbies but a lot of intermediate players still make this mistake, when playing, especially chords, relax your left thumb, never put more force on your thumb than your fingers, the moment that you do this, all kinds of mistakes will follow. Practice centering your thumb directly at the center of the chord formation that you are trying to do on your other fingers. One thing to get this right is to practice playing different songs, the more songs you can play, the more you are exposed to different chord patterns. Visit here, it's the site that I use to learn new ones. The owner is my friend but if he wasn't I'd still use it.

Proper Posture

Now we all know that proper posture + rock and roll really doesn't match but trust me, looking cool but suffering from terminal back pains in the NEAR future is not worth it. It's better you practice sitting up straight. One thing I do is to still use my strap even if I'm sitting, it gives myself some kind of assurance that whatever I do, the guitar will not fall from my lap and damage it while I sit and sob at the horror that engulfs my eyes... Ok, we a went little bit far on that. But trust me, wearing a strap while sitting down makes it more comfortable to sit up straight.

Use A Pick!

No matter how you like to avoid it, there will come a time where you will be the one to willingly use it, but it's still better to start now. Using a pick is very beneficial, for example, you want to learn a really cool guitar solo, but find it very fast to do with your right hand fingers, a pick can give you the ample speed to achieve that. Not only that, some songs are made to be played with a pick.

Maintenance

Whether it is just a hobby, it is important to note that, taking care of your guitar is very important, a well-maintained instrument could last for 15-20 years and still produce pristine quality sounds. But if you just leave your guitar inside your closet after playing and open it once every two weeks then I'm afraid it's days are numbered. A properly maintained instrument is always clean from dust, never dropped from high places, always apply a string solution or alcohol on a piece of cotton while rubbing it on the strings after playing, this will enhance the string's durability and you could use it for more than two months without rusting or having a string snap. Remember, if the strings are rusty, change it immediately, playing with a rusty set of string could hurt your fingers or damage the surface of the frets and fret board. Not to mention that it is almost impossible to properly tune a string consumed by rust.
